Landi is a father who secretly camps in the marshlands of Zapata, where he hunts crocodiles with his hands to feed his family. The radio reports hundreds of daily deaths from the pande- mic and strong social tensions in Cuba.
On the coast, his wife Mercedes searches for charcoal to cook and takes care of their son, who suffers from severe autism. Days go by, and Mercedes becomes impatient. Landi should have returned by now, and there is no news of him. She fears something has happened to him, but she cannot say anything to avoid giving them away.
He finally appears, carrying the food that enables them to survive, before having to return to the marsh. Their lives are a cycle, plagued by need and absence.
There is always difficulty using modern means to document 'primitive' forms of living. I think this piece did a fair job at documenting the lifestyle & struggles that transcend not only barriers; But the areas of thinking that those in the modern world often forget exist. This did a good job humbling those ideas of what it means to alive in the modern world, while bringing a sence of honor to the men & women that continue the pursuit in the face of difficulty.

I signed up to c5 just to watch this doc, it's very decent. I appreciate giving John Law a platform to give history and his concise opinion about what BM is about. He is well hated by the BM organization. I can't really understand why BM would have an issue with this documentary as it doesn't really place them in poor light other than perhaps the portions where John Law explains why he left. I worked for BM from 2004-8 and I could definitely give you some actual ugly dirt about that whole operation, but I digress. Elmer is a compelling personality, but I find the film maker struggling to make a real solid theoretical connection between BM and an immigrant day laborer. It's obvious that it's supposed to be about have and have nots, but I didn't really see that idea play out in the footage as much as I had expected. I get what is going on here, and I agree with the concept, but it doesn't really come thru as much as perhaps the film maker would like. In any case, it's a solid film, and I would recommend watching it even if you have no interest in the BM phenom.
